How to Play

Players move around the board individually or in teams, completing drawing, acting, trivia, and personal-sharing prompts inspired by four paths of yoga. Complete challenges to move forward toward Moksha, with collaborative, individual, and mini-game variations that let you shape the experience to your group.

Objective

Be the first player or team to reach Moksha.

Before You Begin

  • Set an intention. Take a moment to name an intention for your time together and agree to honor consent and confidentiality. What is shared in the circle stays in the circle.
  • Choose how you’ll play. For the standard game, divide into two or more teams with at least two players on each team.
  • Choose Continuous or Rotation Play:
    • In Continuous Play, a team that completes a challenge moves forward one space and continues playing until a challenge is not completed.
    • In Rotation Play, a team moves forward one space after completing a challenge, and play passes clockwise after every turn regardless of the outcome.
  • Choose a timekeeper. Use a one-minute timer that everyone can hear.
  • Start. Place each team’s meeple on the Start space.

The Four Paths

Each path offers a different way to play and engage through action, expression, knowledge, or direct experience.

Karma (kahr·muh)

Path of Action · Draw

Hands - Karma Icon

The player whose turn it is draws a card and has one minute to DRAW the word or phrase for their teammates to guess.

  • A correct guess moves the team forward one space.
  • The artist may not draw yoga postures, numbers, or words, or act, speak, or make sounds.
  • Teammates may ask questions, and the artist can draw responses.
  • If the artist does not recognize the word or phrase, they may draw another card.
  • Trust Intuition: draw with your eyes closed when the active-mind icon appears.
  • Balance the Mind: draw with your non-dominant hand when the hand icon appears.
Hand drawing - Karma

Path of Action · Draw

Bhakti (bahk·tee)

Path of Devotion · Act

The player whose turn it is draws a card and has one minute to ACT the word or phrase using gestures, expression, and movement.

  • A correct guess moves the team forward one space.
  • The actor may not perform yoga postures, point at objects, make sounds, move their lips, or spell letters.
  • Teammates may ask questions, and the actor can respond nonverbally.
  • If the actor does not recognize the word or phrase, they may draw another card.
  • Community Play: when this appears on a card, all teams participate using the same card.

Jnana (gnyah·nuh)

Path of Knowledge · Think

The player whose turn it is reads the trivia question aloud. The team gets one chance to THINK and answer correctly.

A correct answer moves the team forward one space.

Questions draw from:
India · Deities · Anatomy & Physiology · Sanskrit · Chakras · Philosophy · 8 Limbs · Asana

Raja (rah·juh)

Path of Meditation · Share

The player whose turn it is draws a card, reads it silently, and follows the directions.

  • Completing the activity moves the team forward one space.
  • The rest of the group practices deep listening while the player SHARES.
  • Activities are designed to take about one minute, though players may choose to take more time.

How Gameplay Works

  • Begin with Community Play of Karma. All teams participate. The team that answers correctly first advances one space clockwise and takes the next turn.
  • Landing on a Path. When a team lands on Karma, Bhakti, Jnana, or Raja, draw a card and follow that path’s prompt.
  • Yogi’s Choice. When a team lands on Yogi’s Choice, choose which path to play, then draw a card from that path. If the group decides to skip one of the four paths for the entire game, that path may be replaced with Yogi’s Choice.
  • Stealing. If the active team does not get the correct answer in Karma, Bhakti, or Jnana, opposing teams get one chance to steal, beginning with the team in last place and moving toward first.
  • Community Play. When a team lands on a Community Play space, or draws a Bhakti card marked Community Play, all teams participate using the same card. Each opposing team chooses its artist or actor. The first team to answer correctly advances one space. If no team answers correctly before time runs out, play moves to the next team.
  • Free Play. The artist or actor has one minute to move through as many words or phrases as possible. The team advances one space for each correct answer. There is no Community Play on a Free Play space.

Liberation + Make It Personal

  • Reach Moksha. The first player or team to reach Moksha wins. You can also keep playing until everyone reaches Moksha.
  • Make it personal. Like any practice, Moksha is here to serve the people playing. Adapt the game to fit what your group needs in the moment, knowing that those needs may change each time you play.

Alternative Ways to Play

Collaborative

Play together as one group with a single meeple, taking turns clockwise and working collectively toward Moksha.

  • Begin with the youngest player drawing a card and following the Karma prompt. If completed successfully, move the meeple forward one space.
  • In Jnana, everyone can collaborate to choose the correct answer.
  • There is no Community Play or Stealing in Collaborative mode.

Individual

If you have an odd number of players, or everyone prefers to play individually, use Individual mode.

  • Choose Continuous Play or Rotation Play.
  • Each player places a meeple on the Start space.
  • Begin with the youngest player drawing a card and following the Karma prompt. If completed successfully, that player advances one space.
  • In Karma or Bhakti, both the artist or actor and the guesser advance one space for a correct answer.
  • In Jnana, the active player answers first. If the answer is incorrect, the other players get one chance to steal, beginning with the player in last place and moving toward first.
  • There is no Community Play in Individual mode.

Mini-Games

Moksha can also be played using only one or two of the four paths.

Choose the path or paths you want to explore, play them as a standalone mini-game, and keep score on paper if you want a competitive format.
